For this challenge I chose Sunshine in The Rain by Penny Black.  I colored the bear in Warm Gray 0 1 3 and 5 and textured him with a terry cloth rag and blending solution.  The background was done with BG0000, B000, B00, W1 and BG72.  Reds are a combo of R05, R27 R46, R56 and R86.  Teals are BG72, BG18, BG75, BG78.  Yellows....I honestly don't have a clue :)

Father's Day Altered Shadow Box

Hello,

Today is Father's Day! I hate it that I am 2,000 miles away from my Daddy.  Yes,  I am a middle aged Daddy's Girl, and I am proud of it.  I wanted to do something that was different than a card.  I couldn't figure out how to alter a tie so I did a vintage shadow box.  Besides,  I doubt he would wear a tie with all this stuff attached.

It's not hard and only takes 1-2 hours.

Here are the supplies you will need:

• Instant coffee with a spray bottle with water mixed with instant coffee. 
• DP102 Detailed Gold Embossing Powder
• EP231 Lapis Embossing Powder
• Copic refills in E59 and B39 with small spritz bottles.
• Round tags with metal trim
• Archival inks in Sepia or coffee and Cobalt Blue
• Distress ink in Brown for inking edges
• May Arts Ribbon - is my preferred ribbon
• twine - neutral 
• light blue organza with satin edging
• brown organza with satin edging
• cream organza
• light canvas with black stripe
• burlap

The Stampendous stamps I used for this project:

• R163 Old World Map
• SSC1166 Air Travel Perfectly Clear 
• CRW087 Navigateur
• P143 Carte Postale
• **NOTE the above gears stamp has been retired...Substitute SSC1143 Steampunk Gears

Spritz papers with copics!!!  It's fun and dries fast :)

• Mix 70% Isoprophyl Alcohol with 15 drops of copic ink into a .25 oz spritz bottle.
• Add more ink if you want more color and less ink if you want less color.
• The color will lighted as it dries

Stamp images as shown.  Also tear apart light weight card board for texture and spritz.  Also stamp letters to spell out love and dad.  Here is a close up of placement for the letters, the post card and the world map.  You can also see Where I placed the burlap and ribbons for this section of the box.  (In the below picture)

Stamp and emboss the CRW087 Navigateur with both EP231 Lapis  and DP102 Detailed Gold Embossing Powder sprinkling more of the Lapis over sections of the image than the detailed gold.  Stamp the World Map on the main tag, as well as, the postage stamps from SSC1166 Air Travel Perfectly Clear.  Tie ribbon.

More Die Tips

Rhea here to bring you a simple and elegant little card using Spellbinders Delight Dies.  These little dies are a new addition to the Spellbinder Collection this year.  They are are amazing and very affordable!!! 

This die is Medallion 1D-Lites

I choose to not cut out the shape of the die but just the details inside my card center.  This is one of the reasons I love these little dies so much.  You can cut the center only on a large piece of cardstock and use it as a throw away stencil :)  Yes, these are very intricate dies...No worries!  Don't forget the tip I gave you a couple of weeks ago. 

• Mist the back of the paper with water
• Cut/emboss
• Leave paper in die
• Use heat gun to heat dry the "back side" of the paper
• Paper will come out a lot easier and your emboss will be deeper

If you prefer to use wax paper that will help as well.  Some people use baby powder to sprinkle the die first.  I use corn starch.  It is more grainy and helps to release the wax paper better which helps release the card stock.  Remember, anything you put between the die and your card stock will effect the depth of your emboss and your cuts.  So here is a little tip for that.....

Sometimes intricate does don't cut all the grooves :(  if you rotate your die and paper 90 degrees and run it again it should work.  This could also be because you have a warped cutting matt.  Or a heavy used area.  Make sure to turn and flip boards and replace them from time to time.  I have a set just for intricate dies.  And save the really old junky ones for the simple shape dies.

Tips for working with Ribbon

I wanted to take just a little of your time today to share some quick tips on working with ribbon.

As most of you know we a Stampendous prefer to work with May Arts Ribbon.  May Arts Ribbon is really the cream of the crop when it comes to ribbon!!!

So, let's get started 

In this project I have used two contrasting colors of organza ribbon with a satin edge, a soft eggshell organza, a very nice canvas ribbon, a touch of neutral twine and my favorite....Burlap Ribbon.

I love altering books, cigar boxes and tomorrow I am sure I will find something else to alter.  When doing this depth and texture is everything.  Ribbon is the key to the texture in this design.

Let's take a look inside;  The entire design has a lot of corners and so did the inside of the box.  I wanted to soften and round the inside a bit.  

• #1 with the Burlap Ribbon from May Arts.  Simply, attach to the outside edge with Sookwang tape (I find this is the best tape when working with wood boxes and burlap).  Only use enough tape to hold 1/4" of the the inside edge and secure it.  Lightly pull it over the corner and secure it with another piece of 1/4" sookwang tape.  Your sharp corner is gone and you have a nice rounded corner with wonderful texture.  

You may also notice the ribbon in this box looks a little strange.  No it isn't wrinkled.  May Arts organza ribbon is amazing to heat with your heat gun! There are a couple of ways to do this

• For the longer pieces of organza ribbon = Tape one end to the table.  Pre-heat your heat gun. Quickly hit and release as you go down the ribbon.  Be careful so you don't burn holes in the ribbon.
• For the bows on the tags = tie the organza in place and do the same process as above

Be careful because if you don't work fast you can burn holes in the ribbon.  It is beautiful the way it shrivels up and makes if very vintage.

I dove in with a little Periwinkle and Amethyst embossing powder, Dylusions Ink Spray from JoAnns, Spellbinders Basket Weave embossing folder and Adorning Squares and 3 episodes of "Lost" on Netflix and, this is what I came up with.

Now on with the hop....I can not believe how many prizes there are!  I am even giving away prizes :)

Core'dinations/May Arts Ribbon with Stampendous June 6th

Good morning!  

This week the Stampendous gals are teaming up with Core'dinations and May Arts for all kinds of fun projects!  AND there will be prizes! Stampendous is giving away three prize packages including the Cling Jumbo Butterfly Trio (WITH Free Template included), A Jumbo Perfectly Clear Handle, a random assortment of the David Tutera products,  some Core’dinations goodies (again random), a Sand-It tool to make the most of your ColorCore paper, and some yummalicious May Arts Ribbons (random assortment). So be sure to comment on everyone's posts all week long!

Yesterday Stampendous showcased this Giraffe Tag I designed for the April Catalog so today I would like to share with you a quick tutorial on how you can make it.  It features May Arts burlap ribbon, satin ribbon and teal chevron ribbon.  Co'ordinations paper and Stampendous Teal Encrusted Jewel Technique Kit, and, of course, our new Giraffe stamp!

Stamp the image with Archival Ink in black.  Color wash/dry brush with distress inks.  I like to use chalk applicators that look like eye shadow applicators.  You can find these at JoAnn's.  

Cover tag with burlap ribbon and trim with lace and satin ribbon.  Trim Core'dinations card stock to size.  Rough up edges with distress tool or scissors and sand the front.  With a very sharp paper trimmer, carefully trim very, very thin slices of matching card stock.  If it doesn't automatically curl use something round to put a curl in it.  Buch together and secure with glue.  Gather chevron ribbon with thread.  Add ribbons at the top of the tag.

Position and secure card stock and image as shown.  Add bronze mica, teal color fragments and crystal micro glitter using a clear adhesive as shown.

I used the below instructions to emboss the buttons...It is way cool and adds a whole new dimension to your project!
